Hi Michelle ,
you really need to look at the notification from the Local Authority if they have sent one yet. These can be complicated to read , but they have to do them like that for legal reasons. This will tell you the maximum amount of Housing benefit they can pay you , and will also show things such as your income (according to their figures) and non dependant deductions.
It will also differ whether you are in Local Authority housing or private rented.
Have you told them you have had a change of circumstances and income? If not you need to.
There are a number of reasons that all your rent may not be covered .. these include ...
*Your rent is over the Local Housing Allowance (LHA-Private rented) for that area and family size (check on your council's website)
*You have non- dependants living in the house (eg children for whom you do not get Child Benefit , or other adults)
*You have savings/ capital of over £6000.
*They have assessed your income higher than it really is ..
*It is an Interim payment until you provide proof of ESA / JSA etc.
You really need to be speaking to the Council about the reason , as even if your property's rent (private) is above the LHA there is some provision for people who have been able to afford the rent prior to them claiming benefits.
If there a genuine shortfall then Council's could grant you Discretionary Housing Payments (DHP's) to make up the shortfall.
Speak to the Council and then seek face to face advice from your local advice centre.
